As a robotics teacher and coach, I support student learning in a project-based environment using LEGO Mindstorms. Students in grades 6,7, and 8 explore robotics through building, programming, the engineering design process, and learning about robotics in the real world. I also coordinate an Integrated Language Arts class with seventh grade teacher Bill Boyd; our goal is to foster student-directed learning related to the essential question of "What is home?" and "Why do people choose to live where and as they do?" We have learned about housing issues, architecture, the Tiny House movement, and challenges related to living in the Roaring Fork Valley through field trips, guest speakers, and a variety of media.
I coach and promote FIRST LEGO League on the Western slope and serve as a regional tournament director. I also coach and mentor the FIRST Tech Challenge team from Aspen High School, providing students additonal opportunities to learn about engineering, teamwork, and project management. The Robo Yetis team 5196 are an amazing group of young people.
