Nick Stertz

Hi!! I am excited to be a part of the Aspen Middle School team.  I come from New York where I worked as an Elementary School Counselor in Queens for the New York City Department of Education.  Additionally, I am an Ocean Rescuer as well as being a member of a Volunteer Fire Department.  I am looking forward to building wonderful relationships with all of the students, parents, staff, and community members.  I like to make myself as available and approachable as possible; please do not hesitate to come speak with me, say hi in the halls, on the street, or on the mountain.  I believe that effective collaboration makes an efficient and positive learning environment; I look forward to working with everyone.  I enjoy working with each student whollistically; building social emotional health and well-being; establishing work ethic and habits that can be effective for each person.  We will be working together towards character development; team building; social skills work, inculding conflict resolution, crisis management, and developing effective communication skills.  The goal of our counseling program is to celebrate our diffferences that makes each one of us special and unique by emphasizing the importance of empathy, respect, kindness, and communication.  It is essential that we all work together to build a warm welcoming, strong, inclusive, and accepting community.

Together I believe we can continue to build a wonderful learning environment where our community can flourish and students can thrive.

Thank you for welcoming me into this incredible school community.

Kind Regards,

Nick Stertz:)

Skiing originally brought me to Aspen and I have lived here, on and off, ever since; happily settling back here permanently in 2012. I have lived in Australia and worked at Balcombe Grammar School, which is located in the small seaside village of Mount Martha.  I love the outdoors and have traded walks on the beach and surfing with ski days and hiking in the mountains. As well as working at AMS, I am fortunate to teach skiing part time. I feel so grateful for the opportunities I have experienced being part of our unique Aspen community. We have two adventurous mountain girl daughters, Amy and Lucy, who now reside in Australia but attended ASD. My proudest achievement this summer was to backpack the 4 pass loop, reminding me yet again as to why we live here and how great our Outdoor Education program is here at AMS, as it creates similar challenges and achievements for our students. Here in the counseling department at AMS we are trying to help create a calm, centered and connected community so I am looking forward to helping in this way as I love working with the great students, parents and staff who are part of the school!

Thank you for your involvement in our AMS community!

Andrea :)
