Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Steve Sand

I am excited to start another year as a Business, Personal Finance, and IB Economics Teacher at Aspen High School.

I have lived in Aspen since 1997. I have a business/accounting degree from The University of Iowa.  I owned a CPA and Consulting Firm in Aspen for many years, and I was Controller at the Aspen Skiing Company prior to that.  I also wore a suit and tie at KPMG in Chicago before moving to Aspen.  I sold my CPA Firm in 2015 and chose to switch paths and become a teacher.

I am committed to bringing real world materials and discussions into the classroom, from my own experiences in business, from local business leaders, and also from the news, business journals, etc. Small businesses make this community, and this country, run. While it will be amazing to see some of my students succeed as CEOs or CFOs in major corporations, I also know that many of you will excel in a small business, a nonprofit, or of course, your own start-up.  This is what thrills me about teaching this great business curriculum.

My Money 101 and 102 classes (personal finance and investing) should be required classes - but only if you plan to earn, save, spend, or invest money in your lifetime. :-).

My IB Economics class is a great pre-university course to learn how to be a critical thinker about all things economics.  Major units include micro, macro, international economics, and development economics.

I am also the head coach for the AHS Boys and Girls Tennis Teams. Go Skiers! I am originally from Chicago, and I came to Aspen to ski for one winter. My parents still think I'm moving back to Chicago --- next year.
